"What Would Jesus Do? Really?!

It is quite a dangerous thing to ask the question: "What would Jesus do?" Without reverent consideration of Jesus, and His holiness as God.

Without Jesus being BORN/BORNE it is impossible to live...

Two thousand years ago Jesus was BORN in Bethlehem

My sins were BORNE by Jesus' suffering on the Cross

About 1,960 years later, I was BORN into this world.

For almost 11 years my sins were BORNE by myself... and desperately alone...

Amazingly about 43 years ago, I was BORN-again in Christ.

Today I can say with some confidence that I have BORNE Jesus in my heart for four-fifths of my life!

For others to be BORN-again, His message must be BORNE authentically, in our lives and on our lips, to them.

Without Jesus being BORN/BORNE it is impossible to live...

Have a blessed Christmas Day!

More Than Grace - Truth AND Grace

Our error, it would appear,

Is that today we see God

Almost exclusively through the lone

Monocled lens called "GRACE,"

Rather than the historic-biblical and binocular lenses

Of "TRUTH" and"GRACE."

The former fixes us solely in the empathetic

"SUBJECTIVE" experience,

Of the here and now.

Whereas the latter is "OBJECTIVE" -

Providing depth perception....

A panoramic and longitudinal view

Of the present, as well as the future...

Truth and/or Love

Love collectively practiced as Truth, facilitates Empatheticism and then Chaos

Truth exclusively practiced as the highest Love, facilitates Lawism and then Bondage

The ultimate Heresy is: TRUTH and LOVE as synonymous

The ultimate Orthodoxy: the presence of TRUTH and LOVE as distinct, and in full complementary balance, otherwise known as SHALOM...

There has been a FALL and there is a FALLING... It is the inexorable nature of The Fall to facilitate Dis-Integration and/or Borderlessness...

It is the Person of Christ and His work on the Cross to Facilitate the RESTORATION of all things to their proper place, function and balance...

How are we doing?

Orthodoxy - Not "Either Or, But "Both/And!"

It will be the unique distinction for many Christians of this generation, who believe that:

“Authenticity in Christ”

Partnered with Progressivism’s “Social Justice”

Are the holistically and virtually the same thing…

In this relatively new matrix:

The “Need for Christ” is replaced by the “Model of Christ.”

What is emphasized is the “Brokenness of Humanity” over the “Depravity of Humanity.”

- The Saviourship of Christ means freedom from Suffering and Oppression.

- The Lordship of Christ becomes a theology of Piety and Poverty.

Commitment to “Good Works” is elevated over the Conviction of “Falleness and Sin.”

The “Holiness of God” is neutered under the “Guise of Grace.”

“Humanity Completes” the Kingdom of God vs. God’s eschatological and “Sovereign Inbreaking” and Establishment of it.

The "Exceptionalism" of Jesus Christ is relegated to the "Personal Choice Pantheon" of Worldviews.

The Lukan “Sermon on the Mount” replaces “Christ on the Cross.”

On these issues, Dualism's are almost always bad and therefore, Biblical orthodoxy demands the hard work of “Both/And” and not “Either/Or.”

The New Fundamentalists - Younger Evangelicals and Social Justice

Recently, I was part of a FB discussion regarding Stephen Furtick, pastor of the Elevation Church, who is in the process of building a 1.4 million dollar home. I was fascinated, shocked and moved by the visceral discussion that encompassed what I think was well over 140 posts. That discussion/debate, along with numerous other conversations in the past have led me to the following observations...

Note: No one person or group fits all of the criteria or descriptions below, but I do believe broadly speaking it is a fair comparison and analysis.

Contemporary Fundamentalism: The New Christian "Holiness" as the Ardent Practice of Social Justice.

In the 1980's Christian FUNDAMENTALISM distinguished itself by demanding that everyone rigorously practice a list of avoidance behaviors, often described as "Biblical Morality." To be "HOLY" meant that one's life was clearly separated and distinct from the world by the obvious absence (as well as condemnation) of "immoral" sins such as fornication/adultery, use of alcohol, abortion and affirmation of homosexuality to name a few.

Christian Fundamentalism was primarily informed by the Epistles of the New Testament. Christian Fundamentalists were largely theocratic, placed heavy emphasis on "Biblical TRUTH," (read also "Judgmental") and believed a nation would (avoid the judgment of...) be blessed by God if they did not practice the sins of Israel in the Old Testament (See Major Prophets). To be like Holy like Jesus meant to be "Biblically moral." Their message was an attempt to speak from the Bible to an increasingly depraved World, that it might be warned and thus saved before the final Judgment.

In our contemporary society there has emerged a new kind of Christian FUNDAMENTALISM that is distinguished by a rigorous critique of Capitalism, minimalist living and uniform acceptance equity for ALL; known otherwise as "Social Justice," (to name a few). To be "Holy" means that one's life is clearly separated and distinct from the world by the obvious and universal absence (but condemnation) of the gross possession of material goods, the flat rejection of "alienation" or "marginalization" of any one person or ideological group and the demonization of the business corporate institution.

This new kind of Fundamentalism is primarily informed by the Synoptic Gospels, more specifically the Beatitudes of Jesus Christ. Social Justice Christians tend to be more autocratic, placing heavy emphasis on "Biblical "GRACE," (read also never "Judgmental" towards non-Believers) and believe the nation would be blessed by God if we did not practice the sins of oppression in the Old Testament (See Minor Prophets). To be Holy like Jesus means to be committed to the whole of "Social Justice" issues. Their attempt is to speak on behalf of a broken world, from the Bible, in order to fulfill humankind's great and emerging potential without fear of Judgment.

In short, particularly among many Younger Evangelicals, the new and emerging Fundamentalism, is Christian Holiness as the practice of Social Justice.

Note: There are many other correlations that could be outlined, but for the sake of time and space I opted to omit them.

Addendum:

The 1980's Fundamentalist and Contemporary Social Justice Fundamentalists can all fit the criteria below, which basically describes the nature of "Fundamentalism" as a whole:

1. Specific FUNDAMENTAL tenets, or the principles of the faith, have been identified as true and non-negotiable for all believers.

2. Supportive Biblical exegesis, connected to the life and teachings of Jesus, are identified and highlighted for believers to zealously embrace and follow - in order to answer: "If you really want to be like Jesus, you must do..." (A Mishnah of sorts!)

3. Certain, obvious behaviors, attitudes and values are identified as being (biblical) like Jesus, while others are clearly identified as being unlike Jesus... This usually manifests itself in some form of black and white thinking... Even as (counter) culturally redemptive.

4. The emergence of certain popular "prophetic voices" ("thus saith The Lord!") emerge within the culture to bring direction and clarity to the masses through their books and seminars etc. resulting in GROUPTHINK.

5. Certain people/groups develop WE Vs. THEM social constructs that can often manifest itself in various forms of judgmentalism and self-righteousness.

6. Eventually, on some level, this kind type of fundamentalism becomes institutionalized on some level/place within the culture.

7. Ideological fundamentalist (often delusionally) can at times see themselves as uniquely and courageously living in a counter cultural manner (me/us against the world), believing that their rare lifestyle can be viewed as a social critique.

I find it interesting that if an evangelical, is socially conservative, then that automatically makes them "political." On the other hand if an evangelical is self-described as socially "liberal" or "progressive," then that somehow makes them A POLITICAL - even though they vote for liberal candidates, promote for, or boycott on behalf of liberal causes; or even write intellectually dis-ingenious, and self-righteous hit pieces about Christians who may sincerely think differently than they do.

The truth is socially progressive Millennials are no less political than socially conservative Christians. I guess the only clear cut difference is that their politics happen to be (like the Fundamentalists claimed in the 1980's) "God's politics," that's all... :-)

Economic or Political Self-Interest or Selfishness

Key quote: "Is it really true that political self-interest, is nobler somehow than economic self-interest?" I think the venerable doctrine: "Total Depravity," gives us an answer to this question...

A more nuanced (
and accurate) understanding regarding how Capitalism works makes a clear distinction between "Self-Interest" vs. "Selfishness." On the whole, Economic Socialism assumes it has no "Self-Interest" and declares itself devoid of "Selfishness." Really?

Mainstream Media and Social Engineering

The Mainstream News Media is the single most powerful institution in our culture with the least amount of accountability; and in terms of their comprehensive presence and consistency of message, they have no peer when it comes to social engineering.

Of Ideological Dissidents and Prophetic Voices

If our life-style, values and
narrowed theological emphasis
Are all affirmed by Pop Culture,
Secondary and Higher Education,
the Mainstream Media
And half of the Political Establishment

Then we are not an ideological "dissidents,"

Nor do we have a true countervailing "prophetic voice."

We are simply a collection of millions
of mirrored images - facsimiles...
affirmatively reflecting back...

Post-Modernity and Relationships

One of the great tragedies
That will be forever
Associated with Poster-Modernity
Is the assumption
That to know one another "intimately"
Necessarily means
To love one another well.

Relationally speaking...
Polite voyeurism should never be
A legitimate substitute
for one's innate desire
to know and
to want to be known.

The Way Worldviews Work: "There Can Be Only One!"

Reductionism of Worldviews, (particularly the Christian Worldview) is very much in vogue today - especially among social progressives. Some do this motivated by a desire to minimize potential conflict. Others engage in Worldview reductionism because their Worldview informs and gives them permission to do so...

Thus...

One of the great myths often associated with "tolerance" (democracy) is that all ideological people groups (along with their unique distinctives) can be represented equally. This is not, nor ever can be, a true reality.

For one ideology to express it's distinctives freely and fully, necessarily means the suppression and minimizing of competing distinctives in other ideologies.

Some Examples are: 1. The supercessionism of Jesus Christ (Isaiah 45:5; John 14:16), 2. The Practice of Islamic Sharia Law, 3. Hinduism and Karma as a form of "Justice" 4. Pantheism's view of God and physical reality. 5. Capitalism vs. Communism as competing socio-economic theories. 6. Nietzschean Übermensch philosophy. 7. Humanism and it's optimistic view of the intrinsic nature of humankind. 8. P.E.T.A. and Peter Singer's philosophy of "Animal Liberation." 9. Science's view regarding the random evolution of humans as a biological machine.

At first blush, one might assume that for peace to reign, the only recourse is to strip all ideologies of their unique distinctives, and irrationally declare by political fiat (in the spirit of "tolerance"): THAT THEY ARE ALL NOW THE SAME (sic).

Whether we want to acknowledge it or not, innate in the DNA of all ideologies and worldviews*** is the irreducible and primordial cry: "There can be only one!!!"

***Worldview Questions:

1. Where are we?

2. Who are we?

3. What is wrong?

4. How do we fix it?

Relativity and Make-Believe vs. Truth and What Is Real

One of the unique distinctives of our contemporary society is:

Our sincere resolve to think RELATIVELY,

while in the presence of  TRUTH;
in conjunction with, our almost god-like capacity
to CREATE and experience "make-believe" as almost REAL...

These are astonishing in their similarity...

They in fact share much of the same DNA ideologically...

Personal Freedom As Idolatry

There isn’t anything more revered in our culture
Than the individual’s freedom and exercise of “Personal Choice”

All ethics, laws, worldviews and theologies (Truth)
Are measured by it and placed in subjection under it -

Ironically, lacquered by a very thin veneer with
What we have learned to call “justice”
And firmly established on the simple pretext that we might offend

The disintegrating nature of The Fall is to make us
Faithfully Hell-bent, on a kind of autonomous* antinomianism**

Truth and Justice relativized makes despotic gods of us all

*Autonomous = “Self-Rule”
**Antinomianism = “Against Moral Laws”

Words of Truth, in Addition to The Sermon on the Mount

1 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God--

5 having a form of godliness but denying its power... 7 always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth. deceiving and being deceived…

14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, 15 and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

2 Timothy 3:1-7; 13-17

Pacifism - Assumptions

Pacifism always assumes the existence
Of a moral core within the perpetrator
When in fact none may exist.

The Inner Walk

Those not comfortable
  With being lost in thought,
Are usually too comfortable
With being lost in the world.

There is a particular kind of clarity
That often comes from deep reflection-
Restoring and clarifying life-giving direction

False Security and "The Will to Power"

With an eye on the future...

When it comes to the exercise of "the will to power,"*** it would be prudent to remember that hungry carnivores are always the most motivated and resourceful of hunters - especially when their prey have been lulled into a false sense of security and contentment associated with large numbers and full stomachs.

Remarkably, there are certain kinds of carnivores for whom hunger is just an excuse, because their impetus is really about the intoxicated feeling that comes with the uninhibited use of power.

*** Friedrich Nietzsche believed the basic drive in humankind was "the will to power."

Goodness and Evil, God's Love and Grace

In the same manner that fallen humanity cannot look upon the face of God because of His holiness, so too God's love for humanity prevents them from looking fully into the essence of evil because of His "common grace."

The best of human goodness in this life is still odd and strange to heaven, and alarmingly the worst of human evil is a poor expression of what true evil would have us become.

[6-7 God spoke to Cain: “Why this tantrum? Why the sulking?]

If you do well, won’t you be accepted? And if you don’t do well, sin is lying in wait for you, ready to pounce; it’s out to get you, you’ve got to master it.”

Genesis 4:7 (The Message translation)

Grace is not Tolerance

Many Christians have either replaced or use synonymously the word GRACE for TOLERANCE; of which the eventual ramifications for the believing community will be disastrous, and the unbeliever inherently misleading and destructive.

     Tolerance               Grace

Non-Judgmental      Because of Judgment

I'm Okay and          There Is  No One

You're Okay            Who Is Okay

Entitlement             Payment of Penalty

Minimizes Need       Maximizes Need

For Christ               For Christ

We desperately need a course correction in our theological semantics and praxis.

Convenience and Truth

Culturally, perhaps the most unifying principle exercised,
in the adoption of "truth,"
is predicated on one's own sense of personal convenience.

Conforming To Truth vs. Conforming Truth

It is the hard function of Truth

To bend our Fallen image in accordance to it,
Rather than our futilely attempting to bend Truth

In accordance to our Fallen nature.

No one really breaks the law,

They can only break themselves against it.

Balanced Living In The Attributes of God

When life is seen only through the bifocal lens of Truth and Justice, then we perceive our neighbor's behavior as always being wrong. We judge, condemn and have no hope.

When life is seen only through the bifocal lens of Grace and Love, then we excuse our neighbors behavior is always being right. We rationalize, placate and live in denial.

When life is seen simultaneously through each bifocal lens of Truth and Justice, as well as Grace and Love, then we see more like God.

The truly hard and disciplined exercise of faith is living God's attributes in a balanced and mutually complimentary fashion

Surrending To The Holy Spirit

Most Christians
Have Just Enough Light
In Them
To See Where They Want To Go.
But Not Enough Light
For Others
To See Where They Need To Go.

Our Christian efficacy in the world is in direct proportion to our faithful surrender to the Holy Spirit.

Mature Christians and the Holy Spirit

Most Older Christians

Habitually Read Their Bible In A Manner That  Can Only  Affirm Or Confirm What They Already Believe

Rarely Do They Read It In A Manner That Allows The Holy Spirit To Hijack Them Into A New And Refreshing Reality Of Christian Existence

Sincerely Wrong

The best of our well intended actions

often lead to the worst possible kind

of unintended consequences.

Sincerity is never a guarantee for being right

Being wrong isn't always evidence of insincerity.
